Who are we?
Little Beaks is a registered non-profit sanctuary, rescue, and advocacy organisation for small pet birds, based in Perth, Western Australia.
What began over a decade ago as a single backyard aviary for rescued budgies found on Gumtree and local listings has since grown into a full sanctuary — home to hundreds of birds across six aviaries, including spaces for small-medium parrots, finches, canaries, special needs budgies, and lovebirds.
We provide a forever home for both able and special needs birds.
We do not adopt out or rehome — Little Beaks is a home for life.
While many of our residents come from loving homes where rehoming was the only option, others have arrived after suffering neglect, abuse, injury, or abandonment. Some birds stay with us only briefly — particularly those who arrive too late to be fully treated. For them, we offer comfort, dignity, and love in their final days, alongside any medical support we can provide. Every bird deserves to know love.
We do not breed. Our aviaries contain no nest boxes or nesting areas. Occasionally, baby finches appear despite our efforts — they’re surprisingly resourceful when it comes to nesting.
What We Believe
Our sanctuary is designed to give birds a life as natural and enriching as possible.
We focus on:
Freedom of movement (no wing clipping)
Flock bonding and companionship
Species-appropriate environments
Ongoing enrichment and medical care
Beyond rescue, we actively advocate for bird welfare — speaking out against harmful practices and pushing for better education and legal protections for pet birds, particularly in Australia.
How We’re Funded
Little Beaks is largely self-funded, with incredible support from contributors who believe in giving birds the life they deserve. Thanks to these contributions, we’ve built five of our aviaries and funded life-saving surgeries, including amputations and intensive care for birds in need.
If you’d like to support our work, please visit our Support Us page.
Please Note
We’re always happy to answer questions, but we are not avian vets or certified carers. If you’re concerned about your bird’s health, we strongly recommend contacting an avian vet as soon as possible.
At Little Beaks, every bird is promised safety, love, and the chance to simply be a bird. Their stories matter. Their lives matter. And they always will.
